Isothermal age-hardening behaviour and the phase transformation in a dental casting high-carat Au-Ag-Pt-Zn alloy (71.0wt% Au-10.0wt% Ag-12.9wt% Pt-4.0wt% Zn-2.0wt% Pd-0.1wt% Ir) was investigated by means of hardness testing, X-ray diffraction
study
and
scanning electron microscopic observations. By the isothermal ageing at 450~550¡É of the specimen solution-treated at 900¡É, two phase of the Au-rich ¥á0 phase with a face-centered cubic structure and the Pt3Zn ordered phase
with a
face-centered cubic structure were transformed into two phase of the Au-rich ¥á1 phase with face-centered cubic structure and the PtZn ordered phase with a face-centered tetragonal structure. Herdening seemed to be attributed to the
homogeneous uncleation of the PtZn ordered phase from the Au-rich ¥á0 phase. Overageing with softening occurred following prolonged ageing was due to the heterogeneous formation and coarsening of the fine nodular precipitates composed
of
Au-rich ¥á1 phase and the PtZn ordered phase at grain boundaries of the Au-rich ¥á0 phase.
